David is widely recognised as a leading expert in health, safety and environmental law and regularly provides expert commentary on Newsnight, BBC and ITV news.

David is a dual-qualified lawyer and practices in both English and Scottish courts. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act and associated regulations and also under environmental legislation, David has defended both companies and individuals in a wide range of criminal prosecutions. He has represented clients in UK courts at all levels including the Crown Court, Sheriff Court, Court of Appeal, Employment Tribunals, Inquests, Fatal Accident Inquiries and other public inquiries.

Ranked in the Legal 500 and Chambers Legal Directories as a leading expert in health and safety, David regularly presents informative lectures in health and safety. David is a contributor to Butterworth’s Corporate Liability (Oil and Gas Chapter), Tolley’s Health and Safety, Green’s Employment Law and is also an editor of Redgrave's Health and Safety.  David also co-authored the 1998 Human Rights Act 1998 Explained. 

David will be speaking at the Intelligent Compliance Conference on the trends in HSE law and enforcement in relation to life safety compliance. David will be exploring the related issues from an enforcement perspective with particular emphasis on how organisations can achieve compliance with requirements in a climate of strained and reduced budgets.
